As we all know, yesterday the military aspect of the war against terrorism was begun. My first comment, is my surprise at the fact that nothing was mentioned about it at the NFL game I attended that day. Some friends and I had traveled to Miami to watch the Dolphins play the Patriots, at 1pm EST, and not a word was spoken, or even a message displayed, on the jumbotron. This is obviously huge news, and at a large public gathering such as this, to not make any mention of this event, was a huge omission.
My next observation is that this is one first class operation, one first class country, and one first class president. Many Americans were calling for immediate retaliatory actions, and it did not go unnoticed amongst our nation's leader. However, we proved that we are not simply out for some feel good revenge, as we have done in the past; but for real elimination of this threat to the world. We took our time, set up our plans, double checked our equipment, brought in our backup, and secured our homeland. We did not leak news to the media, we made our first strike, and made it quickly and effectively. America is not a bully. We certainly have the power, and could have just thrown some quick punches right after the attack, but I, and most Americans, are damn proud to be on the team that not only is the strongest nation on earth, but the smartest. We WILL win this war, and when we are fighting an elusive entity such as these terrorists, we need to use brains as well as brawn. Our leadership, our President, and our newest heroes, those men and women of the US military, are doing this. Will more Americans die in this war? Although we pray they won't, we all know and accept that they probably will. Careful, well planned actions, such as we are doing, will assure any American losses are kept to the absolute minimum possible.
And finally, I would like to comment on British PM Tony Blair. What a class act. Typically, the US helps nations in need all over the world, but when something happens here, we rarely see total support. We see protests, flag burning, etc. This incident, however, has really flushed out the mettle of our friends and allies. And Britain certainly has to be ranked right at the top. Mr. Blair took the assault on NY as if it were waged against London. While that IS true, it could have as well been London, or any other major city in the world, not every leader in the world has come out as strong in support of crushing terrorism as PM Blair. Many British were lost in the attacks of 9/11, but so were many other citizens from all over the world. Many Muslims were murdered as well. Mr. Blair, our hats are off to you.
