MY 2 CENTS
9/27/01 - Today I received the following email:
The host of ABC's "Politically Incorrect," Bill Maher, is under
fire for calling recent U.S. military actions in the Middle East
"cowardly." On Wednesday, White House Press Secretary called Maher's
comments "a terrible thing to say" and said, "This is not a time
for remarks like that; there never is."
While Maher says his criticisms were directed at politicians - not our
servicemen and women - many have called for the show to be cancelled.
Log on to http://www.vote.com to tell ABC whether or not "Politically
Incorrect" should be taken off the air. When you vote, your opinion will be
automatically sent to the network.
__________
I did go and vote, and then they try to get you to sign in, but
even if you don't, they still give you the current tally (which at this point is
favoring cancellation). Personally, I don't think this is a time for any name
calling, or divisive talk, like Mr. Maher did. This country is united like it
has not seen in many years. That is a GOOD thing. The media, overall, has done a
GREAT job at not trying to stir things up. We NEED to fight terrorism as a
country, not start second guessing, and have a pissing contest as to how to go
about getting things done, while bin Laden laughs in our face - and kills more
Americans. Although Fox news is the network I watch mostly, and I find their
coverage has been excellent (as has most of the coverage), I saw a Fox News show
the other day with some media pundits talking about how it was wrong for the
media to give overwhelming support to the President's speech to Congress. They
said it would be better as journalists if they were to 'criticize', rather than
rally behind, the (fantastic) speech. Could ANYONE think we would be more
successful in this war against terrorism if we were all just pointing fingers,
and fighting amongst ourselves? These people would gladly jeopardize our
nation's security for their own individual popularity. If there are definite
issues that are at stake, than they should be brought up. If a journalist thinks
he should search for something to 'criticize', just to be a journalist, they
should take away his pencil (or laptop).
We are here, we can't turn back and do it again. There is plenty
of time for criticism later. Lets concentrate on doing our job, and doing it
UNITED. The American people can not, and will not, be denied, when our will is
put together. All the other late night talk shows did an exemplary job on their
first night back (with Letterman being a real standout). Do I think Politically
Incorrect should be cancelled? No. Just put on hold. Suspend him without pay,
like a sports player. If, when he comes back, he does the same thing, than
cancel.
And is Bill Maher more dangerous than Democratic Representative
Barbara Lee from California? We elected this person, for God's sake. (for
a brief reminder, she was the only member of congress who voted against this country
using military power to fight the war on terrorism). Now there's an
embarrassment to our country that should be thrown out of office. Would her
stance have been different if the 5,000+ innocent people killed were in her own
district? I don't know Congresswoman Lee, and maybe she has good ideas and
ideals regarding her own local community. She obviously lacks the judgment to be
able to handle matters of a national concern (as a matter of fact, the biggest
concern to hit this country in many, many years). We, as Americans, need to be
more aware of national ramifications when installing local leaders. Still, she
did not deserve the threats of physical violence against herself, by Americans,
for making a stupid decision. She should just be pushed aside, like Bill Maher,
at least for a while. Luckily this country has enough backup and redundancies,
that one dumb decision by an individual, doesn't threaten us all.
Lets stay focused. If the networks can't control their
spokespeople, the advertisers will control the networks. The advertisers know
where 90% of the consumers in this country are on this thing.
